5/26/2008 U12 Storm finish 3rd overall in Memorial Day at Lowell
The North Shore Storm U12 Junior Olympic girl’s softball team competed in their first tournament of the year on Memorial Day weekend in Lowell MA. The team, in its first year together, is made up of girls from seven different towns and cities (Danvers, Everett, Medford, Lexington, North Reading, Lynnfield and Saugus) should see tremendous success this summer based on the team competing well against some top Jr. Olympic programs from all over New England, finishing third in a nine team tournament.
In the first of three games on Saturday the Storm faced a traditionally strong Hot Shots team based out of Woburn. After a scoreless first inning the Storm used a mix of speed and discipline at bats to score 8 runs in the second inning behind hits from Becky and Julia. The eight runs would prove to be more than enough behind the pitching from Becky and Jennifer and some strong defensive play at third base form Courtney.
The second game in the seed round on Saturday had the Storm face the NH Lightning who jumped out to an early lead with Courtney pitching for the Storm. After settling down and she shut down the Lightning then next 4 innings. The Storm battled back to score two runs in the 3rd with a hit each from Allison and Chrissy both using their speed to steal 2nd and 3rd eventually scoring on wild pitches. In the 4th inning the Storm would tie the game with Courtney walking eventually getting to third on a pass ball and a steal, then scoring on a perfectly placed bunt by Jaclyn P. Kendall then got the Storm rolling again with a single and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. The game ended in a tie but not without a last chance to win it in the last inning, when Becky hit a bomb into left center resulting in a triple but was stranded there. Defensively the Storm had a very strong game from Jackie R at second base making 4 put outs including a big catch on a line drive that would have resulted in another NH run.
In the last seed round game on Saturday the Storm played another NH team the North East Invasion. Kendall started the 3rd game and pitched 3 strong innings and left the game with a 5-3 lead before giving way to Hoffman. Behind hits form Alea, Nicole and Allison the Storm was able to post a 7 - 3 lead going into the 5th inning however the long day and fatigue seemed to set in and they could not hold off the Invasion who made a strong come back to tie the game.
The Saturday seed round had the Storm in the 4th seed of a nine team field and facing a strong NH based Hudson Heat team in the single elimination championship round on Sunday. After a scoreless first inning the Storm got a big hit from their catcher Jess driving in two runs that proved to be all pitcher Becky would need as she went on to pitch a 3 hit 1 run strong 6 innings. Chrissy also had a big hit in the 3rd inning driving in Julia and Alea. The Storm eventually won their first Sunday game 5-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
The semi final game had the Storm face off against one of the strongest U12 teams in the North East, The Mass Drifters based out of southern Massachusetts. The Drifters proved to be too much for the Storm on this day however they should meet again in upcoming tournaments this summer. The players and coaches are committed to work hard in the areas where they need to focus in order to have more success in the upcoming tournaments.
The Storm finished 3rd overall in the nine team Memorial Day tournament and are preparing for their next one held the weekend of June 6th with teams from 4 northeastern states competing in the NSA State Qualifiers.
